This weekend is the Academy Awards and while I probably won't watch it live -- that's what the DVR is for, people -- I will be cheering for The Garden to win best documentary. It's a local Los Angeles story about a garden in south central that was birthed after the 1992 riots and grew into a 14 acre refuge and food source for a neighborhood community of mostly immigrants. When the property was sold and the threat of bulldozing became real, a movement was born. The documentary tells the tale touching on issues like the environment, city politics, food, social justice, real estate and community organizing. And since it's L.A., there are celebrities involved too -- Martin Sheen, Daryl Hannah. Check out the trailer and then tell me how your garden grows.
