Kudos to Naomi Pfefferman for her profile of Alicia Silverstone in the Jewish Journal. Silverstone, who is promoting her new book The Kind Diet: A Simple Guide to Feeling Great, Losing Weight and Saving the Planet, discusses everything from Hebrew school, how she used to "freakin' love gefilte fish and matzo ball soup", and the animal-rights movement's controversial comparison of the holocaust to factory farming. She said:
I'm always hesitant to go there because I don't want to alienate people. We all know the holocaust was devastating; one of my oldest, closest family friends is a survivor. But for me, it's the truth. The production of animals is the greatest holocaust that is happening now.
I recently interviewed Silverstone for an upcoming Natural Health cover story, but I stuck to less contentious issues like her zeal for vegan cooking and her adherence to a macrobiotic diet and philosophy. We also talked a lot about her book, which is a very well researched document on the health and moral hazards that come with the consumption of animals. It's a pretty swell cookbook too.
I made her rice porridge for breakfast the other day (using brown rice leftover from the night before) and I'm definitely going to stock up on a key macrobiotic ingredient: umeboshi plums.
